No. 22 The Birch Forest
This kakemono is inspired by the elegance and timeless character of the birch tree.
The stylised white and grey textured bark has an inherent artistic value and seems destined for brush strokes.
Shirakaba is the Japanese name for white birch trees. Shira meaning "white" while kaba is the combined kanji for "wood" and "beauty", giving white birch trees the poetic meaning of pure elegant beauty. The red kanji is my signature "nami" or wave.
Kakemonos - usually placed in a niche as one enters the house [ t o k o n o m a ] - are meant to encourage one towards reflection on the current season and introspection as well - perhaps before savouring a cup of tea.
The scroll is handpainted and handwritten with ink and entirely handmade.
