The 'Moon Rabbit' [ Tsuki no usagi] art is inspired by Kobayashi Issa's [小林一茶] haiku below:

What imperial sign
Lies in the moon ?
White rabbit.

The ancients believed that seeing a moon gazing hare would bring growth, rebirth, abundance, new beginnings and good fortune.  Since the hare can sleep with its eyes open, the Romans equated it with vigilance and believed that rabbits watched over everything–just as the moon appears to.

Kakemonos - usually placed in a niche as one enters the house [ t o k o n o m a ] - are meant to encourage one towards reflection on the current season and introspection as well - perhaps before savouring a cup of tea.

The scroll is handpainted and handwritten with ink and entirely handmade.
